The Daily Spur Word Prompt Feed

The Last Feed

The old barn creaked a mournful tune in the predawn chill. Dust motes danced in the weak beam of Elias’s lantern as he shuffled towards the feed bin. His joints ached, a familiar counterpoint to the lowing of the cattle waiting in the yard. He scooped the cracked corn and oats, the familiar weight grounding him in the routine of his seventy years.

Today felt different, though. A heaviness clung to the air, thicker than the usual barnyard smells. The doctor’s words from yesterday echoed in his mind: “Rest, Elias. You’ve earned it.” But the animals didn’t understand rest. They understood the clatter of the scoop, the promise of warmth in their bellies.

He poured the feed into the long troughs, the hungry sounds of the cattle a strange comfort. He watched them eat, their rough tongues scraping against the wood, their breath misting in the cold air. He remembered his father doing this, his grandfather before him. Generations bound by this simple act of providing.

As the first sliver of dawn painted the eastern sky, Elias leaned against the barn door, the empty feed bucket heavy in his hand. A quiet satisfaction settled over him. He had kept his promise, one last time. The cattle were fed. And as the sun climbed higher, casting long shadows across the yard, Elias finally allowed himself to rest.
